13 must have iPhone applications for the frugal or money saving geek

iphone appsI never understood the allure of the iPhone until I bought my own a few days ago. My frugal readers would argue that my purchasing the iPhone was not frugal one bit, however, I would have to argue. I was forced to purchase a phone as my previous phone had fallen off the window sill above the kitchen sink and dropped right into the dishwater. I didn’t want to buy another crappy phone, because if I bought the right phone I knew it would last much longer and I would use it much more. Instead of buying two or three crappy phones over the next couple of years, I’ve got one that will last and that’s quality. We are disconnecting the home phone finally, to make up for the difference in cost in the data plans associated with the phones. Who needs a land line anymore? When the kids come of age to stay at home by themselves, we can add another line for $10 a month, for now the $30 for the home phone just doesn’t make sense.

Having said that, the major reason I was confident that my iPhone was a frugal buy was because of the money saving opportunities I could reap with the various applications you can buy (typically for $.99, some are free – the most expensive about $3) for the iPhone. Below are a list of numerous iPhone applications that can save you tons of money and more than make up for the cost of the iPhone.

Frugal Golf GPS:

“Why pay for all the bells and whistles when you don’t use them? Frugal Golf GPS by MapMuse is an inexpensive and simple to use tool that uses the iPhone’s built-in GPS to give golfers real-time yardage from their ball to any pin marked on the golf course.

This app is for DIY (do it yourself) individuals. Simply use the app to create a course by marking and saving pin positions either prior to play or while on the golf course. You can mark center of greens, front and back of greens, and hazards. Once you have marked a course there is no need to do it again but you can edit your pin positions whenever you want.

If you are familiar with the course it should take less than 10 minutes to set up a course. Otherwise you can go to the course’s website and view the course layout to identify green locations. As examples we have marked the center of greens for two famous courses: Pebble Beach Golf Links and Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters.

While playing simply select a pre-marked pin to get an accurate distance from your current location to that pin. You can also manually refine your current position by selecting manual mode. Simply move your ball to get the yardage to the currently selected pin position.

This is a fun and easy to use app for the frugal golfer. It does what it says it does, and at the right price!”
