Buy Silver bullion! Have a six month food and water reserve for your family. If you can't put aside food for the future then why are you looking at stocks? And silver or gold solid assets can never hurt you. I'm not saying put all your money in gold, but 25% of your investments should be in hard physical assets not play paper. Let me explain - Gold is Gold is Gold it will always be valuable, its preciousness does not flucuate. I just came from a meeting of local small business owners. The association itself has lost members because many active members can no longer afford the modest membership fees. Those who remain are all suffering in the depression (let's call a spade a spade here: what we're seeing is not a "recession"). What small business endeavors survived the Depression and made enough to support entrpreneurs? What strategies did they use to keep afloat? That’s great, but what about small businesses?
